  • WAYNESVILLE — A couple of weeks remain before the boys soccer team holds their tryouts on August 4 so some of the hopeful Tigers-to-be at camp on Wednesday were understandably critical of their own play.
Waynesville coach Mike Armstrong doesn't have the magnifying glass out yet though. He's just giving the players a study guide.
“All we're doing this week is getting the basics down,” Armstrong said. “The whole purpose of camp is so they know what to expect during tryouts. I try not to coach.”
That being said, he hasn't turned a blind eye to the field. He's excited to be back on the pitch and he's ready to see what his team can mold into.
“I think we look pretty good,” Armstrong said. “We've got some raw talent, we'll condition and rub those edges off. Then we'll work more on the fundamentals and get that stuff fixed.”
The 2014 squad will look quite different from the 2013 version that finished 14-10 and lost to Jefferson City in the Class 3 District 10 championship game in Lebanon.
Armstrong says he'll lose eight seniors and by living near Fort Leonard Wood, there's always a chance for some kids to move away.
Even with that difficulty, the Waynesville boys program has never been below .500 in the seven years Armstrong has been coach.
“It's constant rebuilding here, we always start over,” Armstrong said. “The military gives and they take away. I know we'll lose a few, and that's going to be hard, but it looks like the new ones that I know of are promising and hopefully they can pick up where the others left off.”
Therefore Armstrong never lowers his expectations, creating an ongoing spiral of success.
“I expect us to always been the hunt,” Armstrong said. “We'll be in the top half of the conference and our expectation is to always make it to the district finals.”
