  • Incumbent Sen. Dan Brown, of Rolla, is facing challenger Bernard “Bernie” Mowinski, of Sunrise Beach, in Tuesday’s Republican primary election for the 16th State Senate race.
Brown is seeking his second term as a state senator.
He was first elected to the Missouri Senate in November 2010, after defeating Frank Barnitz.
Before he was a state senator, he was the District 149 representative (before the redistricting) in the Missouri House. He won that election over Wayne Bledsoe and Dennis Hustead.
Mowinski ran in 2012 for the U.S. House to represent Missouri's 4th District, but he was defeated by incumbent Vicky Hartzler in the Republican primary.
Mowinski also previously ran in the 2010 election for Missouri House of Representatives District 155 (before the redistricting). He was defeated by Diane Franklin in the August Republican primary that year.
Whoever wins the August primary will technically be the next state senator for the district as there are no Democrats who have filed for the office.
The 16th Senatorial District covers Phelps, Dent, Crawford, Pulaski and Camden counties.
