  • Semi driver killed in I-44 crash in Rolla

  • A semi-truck driver from Arizona was killed Thursday morning in a crash on eastbound Interstate 44 in Rolla.
    Zafir M. Matovski, 67, of Phoenix, Arizona, was driving a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer when the vehicle went off the right side of the road and struck a rock bluff, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
    Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones pronounced Matovski dead.

    Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones pronounced Matovski dead.
    According to the City of Rolla Fire and Rescue, which also responded to the scene, the crash occurred near the 185-mile-marker, just east of the Vichy Road overpass.
    An occupant in the semi, Dimitar Dimitrov, 62, of Van Nuys, California, was seriously hurt in the crash.
    Both Matovski and Dimitrov were transported to Phelps County Regional Medical Center.
    The patrol report states it is unknown if the two were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
    The FedEx semi towing a double trailer was totaled.
    The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m.
    This is the first traffic fatality investigated by the patrol’s Troop I in August and the 15th traffic death for the year so far in the Troop I area, which covers Phelps and five other counties in south central Missouri.
