  • Organizers of the annual Celebration of Nations are gearing up now for the multicultural festival to be held next month.
The 2014 festival will mark the fifth year for the event sponsored by Missouri University of Science and Technology and the city of Rolla.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27, in downtown Rolla, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The festival will start off with the Parade of Nations at 11 a.m. Parade entries are currently being accepted, and all entries must have an international theme or demonstrate traditional representations of culture.
Richie Myers, who is heading the festival this year, said he encourages decorated bicycles and walkers to take part in the parade as well as traditional floats.
People may contact James Monahan, with Missouri S&T, at monahanj@mst.edu for more information about parade  entries.
“We would like to have any interested groups inform us that they would like to participate in the parade by no later than Friday, Sept. 12,” Monahan said.
In the past, the parade has featured flags representing more than 80 nations, marching bands, animals and more.
Also part of the festivities this year will be the International Idol contest. Auditions to be a contestant will begin Tuesday, Sept. 2, Myers said. People may sign up for an audition by emailing Myers at myersrj@mst.edu.
Local talents of all types are encouraged to attend. Past contestants have performed dances and songs.
Myers said about 30 acts have participated each year in the last two years.
Myers also is looking for vendors, including educational and community groups, to participate in this year’s event. The deadline to be a vendor is Saturday, Sept. 20.
Myers estimates that about 2,500 people will attend the festival.
“It’s a great way to raise awareness about your organization,” Myers said.
