  • Jerry Seinfeld. Bill Cosby. Tim Allen. Ray Romano. So many of TV's biggest comedy stars got their start as stand-ups before making the leap to the small screen, and now John Mulaney is hoping to follow in their very funny footsteps.
Premiering Sunday, Oct. 5 at 9:30/8:30c on Fox, Mulaney centers on a stand-up comic who's trying to make it big in the Big Apple — or as Mulaney calls him, "a slice of white bread moving through New York City." The show has already been the subject of countless comparisons to Seinfeld, at least partly because both series include the corresponding star's stand-up routines. "It's a scary thing, a new show," Mulaney — who used to be a writer for Saturday Night Live — jokes in the exclusive video below. "It's especially scary when a new show is titled Mulaney because who the hell is Mulaney?"

Thankfully, now viewers can find out! In the new special Mulaney: An Opening Act fans can see his stand-up first-hand and also go behind the scenes of the freshman series.
"You have to start with the core thing, which is, 'Is he funny?'" executive producer and SNL boss Lorne Michaels says in the video. "And John is very funny." But don't let Michaels be the last word. Check out the special to see for yourself:
