Despite missing more than a few scoring chances, the Laquey High School soccer team still dominated Richland 3-0 Monday night in Laquey to earn its first win of the season.
The Lady Hornets, now 1-1, sliced through the Lady Bear defense with ease throughout the match but had trouble capitalizing on all those scoring chances. They missed five penalty kicks, although one goal came from the rebound on a missed penalty.
“I’m very happy with how we played tonight,” Laquey coach Mike Podurgal said. “If we can play like that every time, we could be pretty good.”
The Lady Hornets lost their opener 3-1 last Monday to Dixon.
Against Richland (0-2), it was only 1-0 at halftime. But in the second half, Laquey sophomore Jillian Klemp scored the second Hornet goal about 10 minutes in after Lady Hornet senior forward Emily Murray missed a penalty kick. After Murray got her own rebound and a missed a second shot, there was a scramble for the ball. Klemp found it in the mud and knocked it past the keeper.
Murray scored the final goal late in the game, going untouched into the Richland zone and drilling a score across the penalty area.
Laquey freshman Sharell Graham scored the first goal of the game— and her first goal ever in a varsity game— in the first half.
The Lady Hornets will play another home game tonight when they host St. James at 4:30 p.m.
Richland, who drops to 0-2 after losing their opener to Camdenton 10-0, hosts Stover Wednesday night at 4:30 p.m.
