Feb. 16 Update

The Pulaski County Commission met Thursday morning and discussed a grant and the recent winter weather.

The first subject the commissioners discussed was a request from the Waynesville Rural Fire Protection District to consider allowing a grant request to come through the county to build a new firehouse in the Crocker area.

The county would act as administrator to distribute the funds for the building of the firehouse.

The grant request is in its early stages, and they aren’t sure whether or not they will qualify for the grant because more legwork is required.

In order to discover whether or not they will qualify for the grant, the district must conduct a survey and do some additional paperwork.

The commission suggested that additional research be done to discover whether or not the county’s courthouse fund could affect eligibility for the grant.

The commission also suggested that some discussion with the city of Crocker about the possibility of going through Crocker for the grant would be a good idea as well.

Presiding Commissioner Gene Newkirk said, “If they can’t help you, we will.”

The commissioners warned Jeromy Moore, who spoke to the commission first, that there would be a lot of paperwork involved in the grant.

Western District Commissioner Rick Zweerink said of the paperwork, “You’ll go through three trees getting it all done.”

Later in the meeting, Newkirk announced that Zweerink managed to pre-treat asphalt roads in his district for $95 Sunday making the Monday morning commute easier for some drivers.

The roads were pre-treated with a beet juice and salt mixture. The beet juice increases the salt’s stickiness, allowing it to adhere to roads longer, reducing the number of times the roads have to be treated in icy weather.
