As part of local African American History Month celebrations, the annual African American Heritage Expo opened over the weekend and will be running through Feb. 23.

The expo features information, exhibits, history, music, art, dancing and speakers celebrating African American heritage.

The opening ceremonies were held Saturday at 3 p.m and featured local leaders such as event organizer Dr. William Boone and Waynesville Mayor Cliff Hammock.

The expo will be open through Thursday. Public tours are available between 2 and 6 p.m. daily. Students from area schools will be touring between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Residents are encouraged to visit the expo and experience the rich cultural history displayed.
