With one of the busiest traveling weekends looming around the corner, millions of Americans are expected to hit the road for the July 4 weekend, according to the AAA, but some Pulaski County residents on Tuesday said they’ll be staying close to home, while others said they’d travel elsewhere in the state.
The AAA projected the number of Americans traveling on vacation this Fourth of July holiday weekend will decrease 1.9 percent from 2008 with approximately 37.1 million travelers taking a trip 50 or more miles away from home, according to a news release. Last year, 37.8 million Americans traveled during the same period, the AAA said.
Dixon resident Meg Freeman and her family, however, won’t be traveling far for the holiday.
“We’re cooking out and going to fireworks at the Methodist Church,” she said.
Alicia Contreras, who lives in Waynesville, had her plans all ready for the weekend.
“We’re planning to go to Branson,” Contreras said. “We’re just planning to get out of Waynesville.”
She acknowledged that money was tight, but would be traveling regardless. But Branson isn’t the only stop for her family this upcoming weekend, she said.
“We’re planning to go to St. Louis,” Contreras added.
Stephanie Houston, also from Waynesville, said she’d be watching fireworks at Fort Leonard Wood and said she thought the military offered more to do. Her husband is on active duty, so she said she thought it was worth it.
Samantha Madson from Dixon said she’d be going to Six Flags to see relatives from Illinois.
“We don’t get to see them very often,” she said.
Madson said she usually goes to Fort Leonard Wood for fireworks, but this year, she said she’d be bringing her mom, sister and family members along with them for the trip. Madson’s daughter, Alexis, said she was looking forward to going to Six Flags to see her cousins.
For 19-year-old Emily Adams, the upcoming weekend is a reason to party.
“The Fourth of July is actually my birthday,” Adams said.
She said she’d be heading to the Lake of the Ozarks, where she’ll be renting a hotel with a group of friends.
“It should be fun,” she said. “I love it.”
