The Newburg girls basketball team (11-3, 3-0 Frisco League) made the trip to Richland on Thursday, Jan. 12 for a Frisco League contest. The Lady Wolves played shutdown defense against Richland on their way to a 46-31 win.
Defense was the key to Newburg's win on Thursday night and they set the tone in the first quarter. The Lady Wolves held Richland to just five points in the opening quarter and had their best offensive quarter of the night to take a 16-5 lead.
Richland bounced back a bit on the defensive end, holding Newburg to just 10 points, but the Lady Wolves stellar defense stayed strong and they were able to carry a 26-13 lead into the half.
The Lady Bears came out firing in the third quarter, scoring 12 points for their best offensive quarter as they tried to start a comeback. Newburg managed to score just six points in the quarter, as their lead was cut to 32-25 with a quarter left to play.
The fourth quarter came down to the free throw line. Richland tried to foul for a large portion of the period and the Lady Wolves converted on all five of their trips to the charity stripe. Newburg also did a great job of dribbling around fouls, allowing them to kill more of the clock before going to the free throw line. A couple of big shots, including a three by McKayla Callahan, helped the Lady Wolves finish off a 46-31 win.
Callahan and Kylee Brookshire shared the team lead in points with 14 and they were the only two Newburg players in double figures. While the scoring seemed to be based around two players, it was a real team effort, according to head coach Steve Guffey.
"All the girls contributed tonight," said Guffey. "Allyssa Dondlinger held Richland's leading scorer to zero points. Mychaela Van Pelt hit a big three when Richland was on a 6-0 run. McKayla Callahan hit a big three in the fourth quarter and Audrey Suschanke answered Richland on two back to back baskets. They were chasing us all over the floor trying to foul and our guards did a great job of running time off the clock without getting fouled."
The Lady Wolves followed that game with another conference game against Crocker on Monday, Jan. 16, but those results were not available at press time. They'll stay within the conference for their next game when they head to Licking on Thursday, Jan, 19.
Suschanke - 4 pts, 4 reb; Van Pelt - 3 pts; Callahan - 14 pts; Guffey - 4 pts, 6 asts, 4 stls; Brookshire - 14 pts, 6 reb; Dondlinger - 7 pts, 4 reb
