Sarah Beth Smith has been charged with domestic assault in the stabbing of her boyfriend.

Sarah Beth Smith, of St. Robert, has been charged with 1st Degree Domestic Assault and Armed Criminal Action for stabbing her boyfriend Friday night.

According to court documents and a press release from Pulaski County Sheriff Jimmy Bench, deputies were called to a local hotel in the 14000 block of Highway Z where a woman had stabbed a man.

Deputies reported in the probable cause statement that the victim said he and his girlfriend, Smith, "were having an argument, she attacked him so he smacked her back as a reaction." She "came at him with a knife so he back up against a door."

"He drew his knife in defense, held it in his left hand down to his side, told Sarah to stop and that he didn't want to hurt her and she didn't want to hurt him, then Sarah stabbed him in his chest," the probable cause statement reports.

Smith told deputies that her boyfriend didn't give her a "choice" because he "put hands on her so she put hands on him." Smith said he was "standing, blocking the door, with a knife in his right hand, with the blade behind his wrist."

"Sarah stated she retrieved her knife out of her pants then stabbed him because she did not want to be the first one stabbed," The probable cause statement said.

Both individuals exhibited injuries observed by deputies besides the stab wound on the victim. Deputies reported noticing a scratch on the right side of the victim's neck, "what appeared to be a bite mark on his right forearm, a red mark near his left cheekbone and blood in his left nostril." On Smith, deputies reported noticing a "red mark and scratches on her left hip.

Deputies also reported, after obtaining written consent to search, discovering a "glass smoking device" that tested positive for methamphetamine, a "grinder," and two more "glass smoking devices with residue" that smelled like marijuana, in the deputy's opinion.
