The body was discovered in a ditch near Rolla.

A body found in a ditch near Rolla has been identified as Kayla R. Wilson, 25, of Cuba. Wilson was discovered by a private individual.

Phelps County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) deputies were dispatched to the intersection of County Road 300 and County road 3220 regarding a deceased female lying in the ditch on Tuesday, January 17. Central Communications received this information via a citizen’s report.

During the course of the initial investigation, deputies discovered a white female, lying in the ditch, deceased. As a result of the follow-up investigation, the victim was identified Wilson.

The cause of death wasn't apparent and Wilson's remains were sent out for an autopsy.

While a cause of death has yet to be determined, the autopsy was conducted in Columbia on January 18.

PCSD Sheriff Richard Lisenbe said they are attempting a follow-up investigation to see how Wilson ended up in the ditch. Sheriff Lisenbe said there were no obvious signs of physical trauma and they are waiting to receive both the autopsy and toxicology reports.

“It’s very unfortunate that this happened to such a young woman,” said Sheriff Lisenbe.
