Police have released the identity of the motorcycle driver killed in Friday afternoon's collision on U.S. 40 at Interstate 70.
According to Independence police, 37-year-old Peter Slusarczyk of Independence was on a 2016 Yamaha sport bike westbound on U.S. 40 about 4 p.m., when he collided with a 2003 Jeep Liberty that had exited westbound Interstate 70 and was turning left across the road to eastbound U.S. 40, according to police. Several witnesses told police Slusarczyk ran a red light, and police said he died on impact.
The Jeep driver was not injured.
Though Slusarczyk was wearing a helmet, it came off during the collision. The impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown to the opposite side of the median on U.S. 40.
The accident backed up traffic during the rush hour at several busy intersections, as police blocked off U.S. 40 in both directions.
