Waynesville AmeriCorps received the 2017 Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service Award from the Missouri Community Service Commission (MCSC) during the Annual Celebration of Service and Volunteerism dinner in Jefferson City, Mo., on June 6, 2017.
MCSC also awarded Waynesville AmeriCorps VISTA member, Nadine Albrecht, with the AmeriCorps VISTA Service Award for demonstrating outstanding volunteer service over and beyond the requirements of her designated program.
The 2017 MLK Jr Day of Service Award honors a citizen, educational institution, not-for-profit, or faith-based organization in Missouri for outstanding work on a project that serves the community in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The award recognized the AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA members, Waynesville R-VI students, faculty, support staff and community members who participated in this day of service.
This past January the entire Waynesville R-VI School District participated in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service coordinated by AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) members. Their goal was to come together to honor and celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by providing community service that helps empower individuals and strengthen local communities. Waynesville R-VI faculty, students and support staff served by participating in “Awesome Acts of Kindness,” reading to younger students, serving food at the local senior center, bathing dogs at the local shelter and creating more than 1,600 usable items donated to more than a dozen community and military agencies in the surrounding communities.
Albrecht, who received the state’s AmeriCorps VISTA Service Award, is in her second year as an AmeriCorps VISTA member, serving as a VISTA Leader. Albrecht’s work ethic, professionalism, depth of knowledge, compassion and tireless sense of duty help her meet the day-to-day challenges of fighting poverty, as well as help her provide great leadership and mentoring to both her fellow VISTA members, as well as those in need.
