The Missouri State Highway Patrol is searching for Christopher Hunt, after the man escaped custody at approximately 10:18 Monday morning, June 26.

Hunt previously pleaded guilty the same morning in Phelps County to the charge of tampering with a motor vehicle last September.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop - I’s Sgt. Cody Fulkerson, Hunt was being transported in a Texas County prisoner transport van when he overpowered the driver and stole the vehicle. MSHP officers later found the van abandoned along Phelps County Road 6300.

The MSHP is currently looking for Hunt, and attempting to find out if he is on foot or in another vehicle. Officials set up road blocks, and search methods include canine units and a helicopter.

Sgt. Fulkerson said Hunt has a violent history and is considered dangerous. Hunt also has a history of assaulting police officers. Sgt. Fulkerson advises residents to call 911 if they see Hunt, to not make contact and let officials handle the situation.

The Rolla Daily News will be following the story as developments occur.
