“Retiree Appreciation Days keeps the retired Soldiers, their spouses, and annuitants up-to- date on changes in their retirement rights, benefits and privileges,” said Noah Stevens, Retirement Services officer.
Events begin at 8 a.m., Friday morning with a golf tournament at Piney Valley Golf Course. At 3 p.m. a retirement ceremony will be held at Lincoln Hall Auditorium, and the annual Retiree Dinner is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. at Pershing Community Center.
Bruce Simpson, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security deputy director and retired sergeant major, has been named Fort Leonard Wood Retiree of the Year. Simpson will be honored at the dinner.
A guided bus tour is also scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Friday, departing from the Nutter Field House parking lot. Reservations are required for the bus tour and can be made by calling the Retirement Services Office at 573.596.0947 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Saturday, a free breakfast will be available for retirees and their spouses beginning at 6 a.m. at the American Legion Hall Chapter No. 331 at 484 North Outer Road in St. Robert.
At 9 a.m., Saturday, Paul Carlton, a doctor and retired Air Force lieutenant general, will serve as keynote speaker and make a presentation at Abrams Theater. Following the event, a Health and Benefits Fair is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at Nutter Field House. General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital staff will be available to answer questions and provide health screenings. Other agencies will also be available to provide information and services.
Stevens said retirees are important to the community and he hopes they will take advantage of the event.
“Retirees are a vital part of our military Family and their experiences and expertise counts,” Stevens said.
Col. Tracy Lanier, U.S. Army Fort Leonard Wood garrison commander, said he is thankful for the years of service retirees have provided the nation.
“We are looking forward to seeing you at this year’s Retiree Appreciation Days activities,” Lanier said.
