Downtown Waynesville will be aglow with holiday spirit for Christmas on the Square Thursday, Dec. 7. The popular annual event will take place on the Square in downtown Waynesville around the courthouse.
Christmas on the Square will begin at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the Nativity up on Bell Bluff overlooking Waynesville. The Nativity has been a Waynesville tradition since the 1950’s.
Attendees can expect to see plenty of fun things for people of all ages at the family-friendly event, including free photos with Santa and the Grinch. Photos with Santa will be available during the entire event.
There will be free hot dogs, sodas, chili, and cider available at various locations around the Square.
Additionally, locals can peruse the many Christmas and holiday vendors who will be set up around the Square.
A train ride will also be available along with carolers singing holiday favorites.
For the convenience of attendees, parking will be available in multiple areas around the Square. The county parking lot, just before the Square, by the light, will be open.
Handicapped parking will be available on Old Route 66 across from the county parking lot and attendees with handicapped stickers or plates will be allowed in to park there.
The Streets around the Square will be shut down from just before 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. when Christmas on the Square is over. Specifically, for those traveling through town, the area between Olive Street and Highway 17 will completely closed during the event.
The event will continue despite weather conditions, unless conditions become dangerous. If that should happen an announcement will be made over the radio to let attendees know the festivities have been cancelled.
