On Saturday, December 23, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department investigated a shooting incident involving a female resident of Rolla. According to the Sheriff’s Department press release, the victim, Tanya Elaine Johnson, age 34, was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla for treatment of a gunshot wound. She was then flown to University Medical Center in Columbia and later pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m. by the attending physician.
A joint investigation was initiated by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. According to Phelps County Sheriff Rick Lisenbe, there has been “a different turn of events.”
“We now have five people assigned to the case,” said Lisenby.  “We are hopeful we’ll get an autopsy report back sometime today, that will tell us more about the details of the shooting.”
He said there would be no toxicology report available, but that the autopsy will be helpful to reconstruct the shooting, such as determining the angle of the shot.
