The Waynesville Tigers faced the Willard Tigers for the second time in two years for the Championship. The results were the same as last year. Both Tigers teams played tough, but Willard won their second District Title in two years.
The Waynesville Tigers were able to edge out the Willard Tigers 11-10 in the first period. The Willard defense held the Waynesville boys as they out scored them 11-7 in the second quarter. Both teams had a low scoring game going into the first half. Both Tigers teams struggled to make free throws throughout the first two periods. The Willard Boys led Waynesville 21-18 as the first half of regulation ended.
Waynesville came out of the locker room running and was able to out score the Willard Boys 13-7 in a great offensive and defensive effort. The Waynesville Tigers took a 31-28 after the third period. The Willard and Waynesville Boys both were able to fight hard till the end. Willard out lasted the Tigers 15-11 in a come back effort. The Tigers had a chance to make a comeback as they had the ball with five seconds to go in the game. They were able to make it to the basket but could not scored.
The Willard Tigers won the game 43-42 and won their second strait Class 5 District 10 Championship. The Willard Tigers will play the Columbia Rock Bridge Bruins who are 26-1 on the season this Wednesday at State Fair Community College.
Head Waynesville Tiger Boys Basketball Coach Chris Pilz said this after the game, “It was a close hard fought game the whole way. They made one more play than we did and it was the difference in the game. Our guys effort was there, but we couldn't get it done.”
The Waynesville Tigers were led in scoring by Junior Carson Cavalier with 14 points in the close game. Junior Tahje’ Stewart added 10 points for the Tigers. Junior Gunner Rees added eight points and Freshman Shaq Fregiste scored six points in the district loss. Seniors Tanner Simpson and David Adams added two points each in the final game of the Tigers season.
The Willard Tigers were led in the scoring by Senior Kobe Holloman who scored 14 points in the win. Sophomore Daniel Abreu scored 13 points for the Tigers. Sophomore Maurice Grayer added eight points and Freshman Balson added five in the game. Senior Elijah Davis scored three points in the Tigers District win.
The Waynesville Tigers ended their season at 17-10. They had wins over the Springfield Kickapoo Chiefs, St Louis Carnahan Cougars, Class 2 Quarter Finalist Crocker Lions, and the Jefferson City Jays. Waynesville had several underclassmen returning for next year.
The Willard Tigers had some big wins over the Bolivar Liberators, Carl Junction Bulldogs, Webb City Cardinals, Republic Tigers, and the Branson Pirates. Willard advances with a 14-12 record on the season.
