The Waynesville Tigers took on the Willard Tigers at home on Friday Night in their season opener. It was a very exciting game. Unfortunately, the Tigers came up short losing 6-4 in the close game.
Ethan Gatzemeyer hit a three run home run in the third to put Waynesville up 3-1. In the top of the fourth inning. The Willard Tigers were able to hit a grand slam reclaiming the lead 3-5.
After a weather break of about 45 minutes between the top and bottom of the fourth, the game resumed.
Waynesville had a few more opportunities to get back in the game. In the bottom of the fourth, Waynesville scored one run on a Noah Ochoa single, but on the same play Tanner Simpson was thrown out at the plate, which would have been the tying run. Willard was able to score a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the seventh the Tigers were able to get a leadoff walk from Colin Crockett. After a wild pitch advancing Crockett, Simpson grounded out to the right side which advanced Crockett to third base. Ochoa was walked and put the tying run on with one out in the inning. However, Waynesville was not able to capitalize from there.
The Tigers were led in hitting during the game by Gatzemeyer with two base hits in the loss. Simpson, Crockett, and Ochoa also had a hit each in the game. Gatzemeyer had three runs batted in while Ochoa had one. Crockett scored twice in the game while both Eric Kane and Gatzemeyer had one run each.
Simpson pitched 2.2 innings and struck out three batters, while walking four. Ochoa struck out three batters and walked one in 2.1 innings. Ethan Brown also struck out three batters and walked one in his two innings.
The junior varsity team won their game 3-0.
The Waynesville Tigers played against the Marshfield Blue Jays on Tuesday March 20th and they travel to School of the Osage and take on Indians at 4:30 PM.
