The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest private funder of children's cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at the St. Robert Community Center on Saturday, April 14th from 10am-6pm, where more than 50 people will shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving childhood cancer research.
Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide, and in the U.S. one in five kids diagnosed won’t survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatments too harsh for their developing bodies. As the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants, St. Baldrick's is leading the charge to take childhood back from cancer. From its beginnings, St. Baldrick’s has believed that kids deserve the chance to be kids – fun-loving, carefree, refreshingly honest, and always a little goofy – and deserve the chance at a healthy future. That’s why donations raised at events like this have made it possible for St. Baldrick’s to fund more than $232 million to support the best childhood cancer research, wherever it takes place.
The Shave for the Brave event is a free, family friendly event where attendees will “Rock the Bald” with music from these local bands, Jordan Bruschke, Justin Madden, Collin Nash, Randyman Band, and Kricket Alley. Food trucks will be onsite as well as face painting from Makin’ Faces and Girl Adored, balloon animals, live performances by local dance groups, superheroes and princesses, a silent auction, and of course, HEAD SHAVING! This event will be honoring our 3 local girls, Haley Dean (6), Avah Jennings (5), and Alyson Elliott (2) who are battling childhood cancer in the local area. In 2017, the Waynesville Rock the Bald event raised over $20,000 for childhood cancer research and hopefully St. Robert can match that in 2018! As a childhood cancer survivor herself, Volunteer Event Organizer, Rebecca Morrow hopes that everyone in the area attends the event and enjoys the days activities while raising money and spreading awareness about childhood cancer.
