The Waynesville Tigers and Lady Tigers hosted the Class 5 Track District on Saturday. The boys placed third with 117 points and the girls placed sixth with 51 points. The top four finishers in each event qualified for Sectionals this weekend.
Senior Darrin Roy placed third in the 100 meter dash with the time of 11.07. Roy placed third in the 200 meter dash with the time of 22.95 in the finals. Senior Eric Head placed fourth in the 400 meter dash with the time of 53.59.
The Tigers 4x100 meter relay team placed third with a time of 43.93. The team was made up of Roy, sophomore Kaden Tripp, junior Johnathan Fobish and senior Felix McCorkle.
The 4x200 meter relay team was the runners up in the meet with the time of 1:29.43. The team was made up of Roy, freshman Almonzo Martin, Tripp and McCorkle.
The 4x400 meter relay team qualified with their fourth place finish. The team of sophomore Jimmy Murphy, senior Jonathan Rae, McCorkle and Martin ran a time of 3:37.27 to close the track meet out.
Sophomore John Pena-Baker placed third in the 800 meter run with the time of 2:03.16 in a close finish. Junior Luke Morrison placed fourth in the 3200 meter run with the time of 10:33.82.
Murphy and freshman Jared Hyatt both qualified for the sectional meet with their third and fourth place finishes. Both of them jumped 6’-0”.
The Tigers had the top three spots in the long jump. They were senior Tyler Pouncy, senior Lamone Tollivar and senior Tracey Gates. Pouncy won with a jump of 21’-9 ¼.” Tollivar jumped 21’-7 ½.” and Gates jumped 21’-4 ¼.”.
Head Waynesville Tigers track and field coach Mike Rawlings said this after the event, “It was a big day for our jumpers by going 1,2,3 in the boys long jump. We were able to jump 3 guys using the State Qualifying standards and they all came through for us. In my 23 years here at Waynesville it is only the second time we've had more than two athletes meet the State marks to compete at Districts.”
The Tigers had the top two spots in the triple jump. Tollivar won with the jump of 45’-1 ¾” while Gates was the runner up with the leap of 45’-0”.
Junior Timothy Brech placed fourth in the javelin with his throw of 143’-8”.
Coach Rawling said this about Darring Roy, “Senior Darrin Roy had a huge day being our only four event qualifier and also having to run two preliminaries along with his four event finals.”
The girls 4x100 meter relay team placed fourth with the time of 53.03 in the race. The team was made up of junior Victoria Perry, junior Gracie Hutchinson, junior Afatia Poinsette and senior Katie Handley.
The Lady Tigers 4x200 meter relay team finished fourth in the meet with the time of 1:50.25. The team was made up of Perry, Poinsette, freshman Astacia Garcia and Handley.
The girls 4x800 meter relay team qualified for sectionals with the time of 11:06.73. That earned the team of senior Alaixces Bartley, freshman Chambre Garcia, senior Makayla French and sophomore Madelyn Newson placed fourth.
Sophomore Hannah Hedrick just missed the top four qualifying spots in the long by half and inch. She jumped 16’-3”. Hedrick placed fourth in the triple jump with her leap of 35’-3”.
Senior Kiera Shoulders placed fourth in the shot put with her throw of 31’-2”.
Coach Rawlings said this after the meet, “It was a real good day for both the Tigers and Lady Tigers as everyone we expected to get through to Sectionals did and we had a few surprises have bigs days and will move on also.”
Waynesville will travel to Sedalia this Saturday for their Sectional meet.
