The Dixon Bulldogs traveled to South Callaway High School this week to compete in the Class 3 District Tournament. The Bulldogs cam away with two wins in the first two rounds. They faced the host South Callaway Bulldogs on Thursday for the District Championship. The results of that championship were not available at press time.
1st Round - Bourbon Warhawks
The first game of the seven team District was a close one that turned into a defensive battle. The Bulldogs were able to win with a walkoff single in the 10th inning.
Both team began the game slow at the plate, while the pitchers had an excellent day. The game was scoreless until the 10th inning when Cyrus Nickles hit the game winning single that allowed Braden Mahurin to score and advance Dixon to the next game.
Walker Shelton pitched 8.1 innings in the game while striking out three Bourbon batters and only allowing five hits in the contest. Sabastian Salais pitched the final two innings for Dixon and only allowed one hit while striking out two batters.
Head Dixon Bulldogs baseball coach Alex Shelton said this about the pitching, “It was definitely one of the more well-pitched games I have seen. Walker Shelton was absolutely brilliant, working into the ninth inning by allowing no runs until giving way to Sabastian Salais due to reaching his pitch count limit. Salais was just as good, picking up the win, while working the final 1 2/3 innings. Bourbon’s pitcher was just as efficient, putting up matching zeroes until the 10th inning.”
Dixon had four batters with hits in the game. Nickels had a hit and the game winning run batted in. Salais had a single and stolen base. Mahurin had a single, stole a base and had the winning run. Clayton Sinden also had a single and a stolen base in the win.
Coach Shelton said this the game, “This was one of the better games I have been a part of as a coach. In the 10th, Braden Mahurin led off with a single. After a steal of second, a balk moved him to third. This was followed by an intentional pass to Tyler Morgan. Sophomore Cyrus Nickels would take advantage of the opportunity by ripping a ball down the right field line for the walk-off win. The game was definitely closer than we would have liked, but any way you can get a win in Districts is BIG!”
Semi-Final - Fatima Comets
The Bulldogs and the Comets faced off in the second round with both teams combining for 25 hits in the game. The Bulldogs had 14 hits, while the Comets had 11. Dixon was able to come back in the final inning and advance to the District Championship with a score of 9-5.
Fatima broke the ice by picking up the first two runs in the game in the bottom of the first inning. Both pitchers held the other team to no runs in the second and third inning. Dixon scored a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 2-1 in Fatima’s favor. Neither team scored in the fifth inning. The Comets added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fatima extended their lead to 5-1 with one inning to go, but Dixon wasn’t going down without a fight.
Coach Shelton said this when asked about the final inning, “We were down 5-1 going into the top of the seventh, these boys showed a lot of grit and a lot of fight and came roaring back to put up eight runs against an excellent Fatima team. The top of the inning started with a double from Jaryn Brown. This was followed by a walk to Clayton Sinden. An infield hit by Walker Shelton loaded the bases, allowing Sabastian Salais to draw an RBI bases loaded walk. Braden Mahurin would follow with an RBI single, making it 5-3. After a strikeout, Cyrus Nickels worked another RBI bases loaded walk to bring the game to 5-4. Shea Houle then followed with a big hit to right field, scoring two to give us the lead. Shannon Kampeter followed suit with an RBI hit if his own, making it 6-4. Jaryn Brown then added his second hit of the inning, only to see Houle thrown out at the plate for the second out. Clayton Sinden added another walk, and then Walker Shelton provided some insurance with a 2 out, 2 RBI hit to make the game 9-5.”
Braden Mahurin began the game and pitched 5.1 innings on the night. He struck out 10 batters and allowed five runs on eight hits. Sabastian Salais closed the game out by pitching the last inning and picking up the win. He struck three Comets out and did not allow another run.
Eight Bulldogs had hits in the win. Shelton had three singles, a run batted in, and he scored once. Mahurin hit two singled and scored twice while added a run batted in. Houle hit two singles and hit in three batters in the win. Jaryn Brown had a single and a double. He also scored twice in the game.
Sinden added a single and two double in the game. He also had two runs and was walked twice. Shannon Kampeter hit a single, scored a run, and hit in a runner. Salais hit a double, scored a run, and hit in a batter. Tyler Morgan hit a double in the win.
Coach Shelton said this after the win on Tuesday, “All I can say is wow! What an incredible comeback from our boys tonight! It puts us at 20-3 on the season and sets us up with a matchup with South Callaway on Thursday at 5:00 for the District Championship. We know it will be a tough game, but after tonight’s win, the boys should be ready and up for the task!”
