The Tigers placed seventh in their Sectional Meet with several athletes qualifying for the State Championship. The Lady Tigers placed 15th in the sectional meet.
The Tigers began with the running events with the 100 meter dash. Senior Darrin Roy placed seventh in the meet with the run of 11.07. Roy was able to move on in the 200 meter dash with the time of 22.95. He placed fourth in the event.
Senior Erik Head placed seventh with his 400 meter run of 53.59. Sophomore John Pena-Baker placed seventh in the 800 meter run with his near season best time of 2:03.56. Junior Luke Morrison also placed seventh in the 3200 meter run. He also ran a near season best of 10:33.82 in the race.
The Tigers 4x100 meter relay team ended their season with a seventh place finish in the meet. They ran the race in 43.93. The team was made up of Roy, junior Johnathan Fobish, sophomore Kaiden Tripp and senior Felix McCorkle.
The Tigers just missed qualifying in the 4x200 meter relay by less than a second. The team of Roy, Tripp, freshman Almonzo Martin and McCorkle ran a time of 1:30.77.
Waynesville placed seventh in the 4x400 meter relay with the time of 3:30.05. The team was made up of sophomore Jimmy Murphy, McCorkle, senior Jonathan Rae and Martin.
Two Tigers competed in the high jump. Murphy place sixth with the jump of 6’-2”, while freshman Jared Hyatt was the seventh place jumper with the leap of 6’-0”.
Waynesville had three athletes compete in the long jump. Senior Tyler Pouncy placed fifth with the jump of 20’-5 ½”. Senior Lamone Tollivar placed sixth with the leap of 20’-3 ½”. Senior Tracey Gates missed his second trip to the State Championship in the event with the his eighth place finish. He jumped 19’-3 ½” in the meet.
The Tigers had two jumpers that qualified for the State Meet in the triple jump. Gates placed second with the jump of 44’-10 ¼”, while Tollivar also jumped 44-10 ¼”.
Junior Timothy Brech tossed the javelin 154’-5” to place third in the meet. That was also a new Waynesville High School record.
The Lady Tigers had several close finishers in the sectional that almost qualified for the state meet.
The 4x100 meter team of junior Victoria Perry, junior Afatia Poinsette, junior Gracie Hutchinson and senior Katie Handley placed eighth in the meet with the time of 53.50.
The 4x200 meter relay team also placed eighth in the meet with the run of 1:45.02. The team was made up of Perry, freshman Astacia Poinsette, Garcia and Handley.
The 4x800 meter relay team finished the meet in seventh place. The team of senior Alaixces Bartley, freshman Chambre Garcia, sophomore Madelyn Newson and senior Makkah Mujahid ran the race in 10:52.04.
The triple jump was represented by sophomore Hannah Hedrick who placed fifth. She jumped 34’-3 ¾”.
Head Waynesville track and field coach Mike Rawling said this about the weather, “The weather Saturday was far from ideal for the first half of the meet while the early events were ran off in a light rain followed by an hour and a half delay due to lightning.” He also said this, “Overall our kids had some of their best marks of the season, but the competition at this time of the year is at it's best also. I'm excited about the kids moving on and very proud of our kids that finished up this Saturday.”
Waynesville will compete in the Class 5 State Track & Field Championship this Friday and Saturday at Jefferson City High School.
