The Laquey Hornets have been a powerhouse for several years in the Frisco League and the area. They were state ranked last year in Class 1 and have been very successful over the last several years.
The team is once again led by Tyler Sevon and Jessica Birdson. Last season the coaching duo placed second in conference to the Crocker Lions, who make it to the State Championship round of games.
Sevon has been at the school for three years now. He had a 14-10 record last season and 3-1 in conference play.
Sevon said this about his plans this year, “We look to improve on last year's record and where we finished our postseason. We have a determined group of boys this year that are looking to go a long way.”
There are several returning starters coming back to make a run for a title this season. They are, Brandon MacDonald, Cayden Powers, Seth Bushley, Sam Urban, Michael Fleschute, Scott Hendrix. Jason Young and Jimmy Helmuth will be joining the program to assist in the success.
Sevon said this about the experience, "We have a very experienced team lead by Brandon MacDonald and Cayden Powers as well as several other senior starters and are looking to improve significantly from last year and make a deep run into the postseason."
The team had several players that earned awards last season. Brandon MacDonald was first team All-District, first team All-Frisco League, second team All-State. Cayden Powers was first team All-District and Honorable Mention All-Frisco League. Both Sam Urban and Scott Hendrix were first team All-District. Michael Fleschute earned second team All-District.
Sevon added this about the group, “I am very excited about this year as a coach, this is my fourth year, so this is my first senior group that I have brought all the way through. I think they are primed and ready to lead and execute efficiently on the field and win a lot of games because they are very talented.”
The Hornets will begin their season with two home games on August 24 and 28 against College Heights Christian and Dixon. The will also face some tough opponents this year as they face the Willard Tigers on September 20, Camdenton Lakers on September 24 and Lebanon Yellow Jackets on October 2. The Camdenton and Lebanon games will be away. They will also add a new opponent on September 14 against the Maranatha Baptist Academy Warriors at the Waynesville Middle School.
