The Deputy Sheriff Salary Supplementation Fund (DSSSF) grant was re-approved by County Commission in mid-July. The DSSSF grant supplements income for post certified deputies making under $31,000 a year.
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department said that if a post certified deputy made under $31,000 dollars a year, then the DSSSF grant would supplement the difference.
The department has applied each year since 2014. The DSSSF grant was started from House Bill 2224 on June 6, 2008 and was approved by former governor Matt Blunt. The bill was made effective two months later in Aug. 6, 2008.
To be eligible for the grant, the Sheriff’s Department said that they must be post certifiable and work full-time. A deputy would have to attend a training academy to be post certified.
The DSSSF grant is not funded by taxpayers, but funded by departments around the state. Kansas City and St. Louis areas, in spite of making over $31,000 a year, still allocate funds for the grant, but cannot receive it. The Sheriff’s Department said they have participated in funding and receiving the grant since 2014.
The Sheriff’s Department has to re-apply each time a new deputy is hired and meets the eligibility requirements.
“We don’t make money from writing tickets,” the department said. To make money, the Sheriff’s Department said they serve legal papers. The Sheriff’s Department keeps the base fee, but donates the rest if it is over ten dollars.
For the 2018 fiscal year, the DSSSF grant fund balance was approximately $11.2 million – a decrease from the $11.5 million from the year before. The record fund balance was $15.4 million in the 2013 fiscal year and since then, the fund has seen yearly decreases.
