The Dixon R-1 School Board managed to deal with financial cuts and still end the year on solid ground.
The 2009-2010 budget was discussed and amended at the meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Dawna Burrow, superintendent of the district, said  administration had a conservative enough budget to make it through any state cuts, and it's ready to handle more if the situation worsens.
"I'm very pleased that we weathered the cuts that came this year the way we did," Burrows said.
Burrows said the next year could be worse, financially, which is why she's planned another conservative budget for the 2010-2011 school year. For next year, she said the budget is outlined with significantly less funds than in the past to ensure that it is prepared for the worst-case scenario.
"It's easier to give more money than it is to take it away," Burrows said. "We are set up to weather the storm."
The total of the 2010-2011 budget is $3.7 million.
Dixon High School Principal Jerry Braschler said the  school has begun renovations, which cost roughly $35,000 to $40,000. The board approved Braschler's recommendation for a bid from MK Locker Service out of Nancy, Ky., to redo the high school lockers for $5,655.
Braschler said the company was the sole company to show interest in the job, requesting information on the previous lockers used. He said the company compared the old lockers to those from a penitentiary.
"They're not your typical high school lockers," Braschler said.
Dixon Middle School Principal Michael Smith recommended the Board accept Leslie Wallace as a new Language Arts teacher, but no decision could be made in open session.
The board also zeroed-out several balances from 2009-2010, authorized a transfer of funds to cover teacher salaries and transportation costs and approved changes made in the student and staff handbooks.
