The Dixon R-1 School District had a positive start to the new school year and is on steady financial ground.
Dawna Burrow, district superintendent, said the district has more than 30 percent in unrestricted reserve funds for the 2010-2011 school year at the School Board meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
“I think that number is an excellent number for this district,” Burrow said.
Burrow said the fund will give the district what it needs to fully operate and also deal with potential issues as they come.
Craig Sellers, board member, said it's important to keep in mind the worst is still ahead in terms of budget cuts.
“We're in a lot better shape than a lot of schools,” said Robert Hill, board vice president.
In other business, school principals gave a rundown of the beginning of the school year, each looking forward to a good year after a positive start.
Joyce Shepherd, elementary school principal, said enrollment is at 550 children for the year. Shepherd said 17 children are on the waiting list for preschool, which has four classes totaling 55 children.
“(It) really concerns me to have that many we're leaving out there without the experiences,” Shepherd said. “But there's not much we can do about that ... we are totally full this year.”
Michael Smith, middle school principal, said 256 children are enrolled for the year, the largest group being seventh graders.
Smith said two new hires have received excellent feedback as the year began and he is pleased they have assimilated to the school so well.
“Really, really smooth start this year; no wrinkles whatsoever,” Smith said.
Jerry Braschler, high school principal, said security cameras have been installed throughout the school, which has been a big help in deterring problems.
Braschler said the high school has 326 students enrolled this year, an increase of 12 students from last year.
“We're off to a great start,” Braschler said. “The kids have just been really outstanding.”
