Charges could come this week, possibly today, in the alleged theft of $50,000 from the Waynesville School District, according to Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Hillman's office.
The suspect is believed to be an employee of the district, but that information was not confirmed by investigators. The prosecutor's office said information will be available once the charges are filed.
The theft of funds from the district came to light in a statement released on Jan. 6. At that time the Waynesville School District said the investigation into the possible misallocation of $50,000 in district funds had been turned over to law enforcement agencies.
The release confirmed the investigation was initiated by the district before it was turned over to law enforcement.
Superintendent Judene Blackburn described the investigation as ongoing. The district, she said, is cooperating fully with the agencies involved.
"The situation also involves confidential personnel matters, which the school district cannot discuss specifically," she said. "However, we can tell you that, at this time, it appears approximately $50,000 in district funds was improperly allocated, and that action has been taken to ensure that this type of misallocation will not be repeated."
In the release, Blackburn said the district could not provide any additional information at this time.
"It is possible that additional information may be obtained during the investigative process that would change the amount at issue, or that the situation may develop in a manner that would permit the district to provide more information to the public," Blackburn said. "If that occurs, additional information will be provided. However, law enforcement officials, who are not bound by the same types of confidentiality restrictions, may be able to provide information that is not available through the district, whether now or in the future."
