A long standing tradition for Laquey Schools continued this year despite the founder of the tradition's retirement last year.
Linda Story, former principal of Laquey Elementary school hosted the school's annual trip to her pumpkin patch.
Linda Story and her husband, Judge Tracy Story, have been inviting the Laquey Elementary School children to their family farm for years. The couple fund the pumpkin patch themselves and welcome, not only the Laquey Elementary School, but have also hosted the Sheltered Workshop and area churches.
On pumpkin patch day, the Laquey Elementary children are greeted at the Story home and driven by Mrs. Story down to the pumpkin patch on a tractor drawn hay ride. The pumpkin patch sits on land that was formerly owned by Linda Story's parents.
The children are allowed to chose a pumpkin, without charge, from the patch and their parents are invited to come down and help. The pumpkins range in size from small to big and many children can be seen with big smiles on their faces because they found the perfect pumpkin.
After they choose a pumpkin, the students are invited to have cookies and punch where Judge Story is likely to be seen helping out. Then the students are given another hay ride back to the buses so that they may return to school.
“Mrs. Story has been doing this for years and the kids really enjoy it,” said Michael Mayle, Laquey Elementary School Principal.
