Students at Dixon High School will face harsher penalties if they’re caught for a second time with a cell phone during school hours.
Principal Jerry Braschler told the Dixon School Board last week that cell phones are becoming a problem and recommended steps to tackle the problem. According to Braschler, there were 114 incidents last semester involving students with cell phones.
Currently, a student is given a warning if they’re caught with a cell phone and is able to pick it up at the end of the day. If it happens a second time, the phone is confiscated and a parent comes to pick it up, Braschler said.
However, that measure has proved to be ineffective.
“I don’t feel that is a strong enough deterrent,” Braschler said.
To tackle the problem, Braschler recommended Friday night detentions for those caught with cell phones a second time, which would go from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It was unanimously approved by the board.
