Cape Air officially has been selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation as the next airline carrier for the Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport at Forney Field.
Cape Air has a long track record of providing quality air service and has increased ridership in the markets it has entered. In addition, Cape Air has a code share with American Airlines, allowing passengers to buy tickets at the American Airlines website as well as other travel sites such as Travelocity or Orbitz. For these reasons, Cape Air was recommended by both cities, as well as Fort Leonard Wood officials, as the preferred airline to serve the airport.
“We are excited to have a quality carrier such as Cape Air enter our market,” said airport manager Chris Schrantz. “Judging by what they have done in other markets, I expect them to be successful here and increase ridership.”
This news, along with the construction of a new terminal building to be opened this winter, will increase the value of the airport as an economic development tool and a convenience for citizens of Pulaski County. No longer will business people, soldiers, or vacation travelers have to drive over two hours to come and go. Instead, they have the choice of a quick, inexpensive, and reliable flight to and from St. Louis and to the rest of the world.
“We're very happy that Cape Air was selected, we think they have a great track record in other areas, said St. Robert City Attorney Kevin Hillman. We're really excited about them being here and we look forward to really good service out there at the airport.”
Hillman said the airline has already contacted city officials to set up meetings about marketing and pricing, something other airlines have not done so quickly in the past.
“We're very pleased that Cape Air is going to be serving our area,” said Waynesville City Administrator Bruce Harrill. “They've done an outstanding job of serving other small airports in Missouri.”
It is expected that Cape Air service will begin sometime in October with daily flights to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.
Harrill said city officials are anticipating an upsurge in air travel rates out of the area during the next few months.
The Cities of Waynesville and St. Robert jointly operate the Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport under a cooperative intergovernmental agreement. The airport is managed by the Joint Airport Board and the cities lease an exclusive use area from the U.S. Army.
