A grant from the state of Missouri will help people adopting pets from St. Robert’s animal shelter with the cost of required spaying and neutering surgeries.
The city received $1,200 from a program that allows drivers to purchase “pet friendly” license plates. A portion of the fees obtained from the sale of those specific plates supports a statewide initiative to provide lower cost spay and neuter services to help control Missouri’s animal population.
“When we adopt a dog out, we give the person the opportunity to have the dog spayed or neutered using that (grant),” said Charles Cochran, a Buildings and Grounds Maintenance employee who is filling in for the city’s animal control officer.
The shelter currently has four dogs up for adoption and maintains an average population of two to three animals. No cats are housed at the shelter due to lack of facilities, Cochran said.
Prior to the grant, the city was only able to provide a discount coupon for the cost of spaying and neutering animals to adoptive families.
For more information about the shelter, how you can help or to adopt an animal, call 573-451-2000, ext. 1144.
