Janet Burdeau Kelty, 82, died peacefully at home Saturday, May 20, 2017.

A celebration of Janet’s life will be held on Friday, June 23 at Rock Quarry House, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Please bring photos, stories, and poems to share.

Born July 16, 1934 in St. Louis to John and Norine Murray Burdeau, Janet, also known as Abuelita, Grandma Gringa, Nai Nai, Grandma Loca, and Mommy Doggy, described herself as a tomboy and fiercely independent, qualities she retained as a single mother of five boys. A consummate reader and lover of the arts, Janet read epic poems to her sons, encouraged them to read, and to be open-minded.

At 53, Janet moved to Columbia, found her dream home with a great park across the street for walking her beloved dogs (Cutter, Dida, and Katie), her garden, and many friends. A life full.

Survivors include her sons; Mark (Kimberly) of Columbia, Michael (Elena) of Denver, Jim of Burlington, Vt., Joe (Li), of Overland Park, Kan. and Dan Kelty of St. Louis; brother Robert Burdeau; 11 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and many cousins, nephews, nieces…and her beloved bearded collie, Katie.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Unbound Book Festival.
