Ray Sterling Kelley, 45, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Tuesday July 27, 2010, at his home, following a courageous battle with two types of cancer.
Ray was born on May 2, 1965 in Overland Park, Kan., the son of William and Ann (Meckle) Kelley. He graduated from Ponca City High School in Ponca City, Okla. in 1983. He married Tarcela “Dimples” Cole on September 29, 1984 in Ponca City, Okla. He has been a resident of Joplin since 1993, moving here from Cranston, Rhode Island . He worked as a plasterer. He was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church. Ray loved the outdoors. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping.
He is survived by his loving wife, Tarcela Kelley, Joplin; their two sons, Conrad Kelley, Joplin, and Brandon Kelley, Joplin; his father William Kelley, Bolivar, Mo.; two brothers, Steven Meckle and wife Jody, the state of Minnesota, and Rick Walker and wife Kay, Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Frances Wilmes and husband Wayne, Joplin, and Connie Rea, Springfield, Mo.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann Kelley in 2002.
It was Ray’s request to be buried at sundown, therefore, funeral services will be 8:00 p.m. Friday at Forest Park Baptist Church. Rev. John Swadley will officiate. Burial will be at sundown at Forest Park Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Conrad Kelley, Brandon Kelley, Rick Walker, Jon Foster, William Kelley, Ray Walker, Ryan Wilmes, and Zach Rea. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Wilmes, Darrell Cole, and Steven Meckle.
The family received friends Thursday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the Cancer Institute in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Chapel.
