Having sex is usually a choice. Becoming pregnant is a possible consequence of sexual intercourse. If a man and woman do not wish to experience the consequence of pregnancy, they should choose not to have sex.
Some assert pregnancy can be avoided by practicing safe sex. Only one practice can guarantee 100 percent safety in sexual activity. The only way to ensure safe sex is to practice abstinence.
Some argue for the right to avoid the consequence of pregnancy resulting from a choice to have sex. To avoid the consequence of pregnancy, they promote or resort to abortion. Abortion destroys an innocent life. Destroying innocent life is evil. Therefore, abortion is evil.
Doing evil to eliminate the consequence of a bad choice is wrong. Making a wise choice in the first place is right. The time to make the choice is before the consequence, not after.
Though we all have made bad choices of one kind or the other at one time or the other, we are capable of making good choices and have the responsibility to do so. When we fail to make good choices, we should expect to suffer the consequences. Making a second bad choice to avoid the consequences of a previous bad choice is not justifiable. We should accept responsibility for our actions.
There is an alternative to destroying innocent life. The option is adoption. Through adoption, good can come from an irresponsible act. There are many couples who yearn to provide a loving home for a child unwanted by its biological parents. What the birth parents may view as a curse, the adoptive couple will view as a blessing. Death of the child is neither the only option nor the best option.
Though some may rationalize abortion, they can not morally justify abortion. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Actions have consequences. In attempting to escape one consequence, an individual or nation bring upon itself another consequence. By allowing and accepting abortion, we have devalued life, eroded the moral foundation of our society, and enabled irresponsible behavior without accountability.
God restricted sexual relationships to marriage for a reason. It is best for both the individuals involved and the society in which they live. A committed loving relationship provides safety and security for the couple and for any children born into their family. Children should be considered a blessing and need both a mother and a father. In a committed marital relationship real love can flourish.
Our founders declared a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Without life, one can have neither liberty nor the pursuit of happiness. Government’s fundamental responsibility is to protect innocent life.
