What you need to know about a long-distance relocation
Relocating across the country can be quite the adventure. But it is possible to make any long-distance move go smoothly. As most everyone knows, even moving from one house to another within the same town can be quite overwhelming and exhausting. With a little planning, you can ensure your sanity at the end of your relocation.
To make sure that you have a successful move, research and find the best moving company. If you choose, a moving company can pack up and box your belongings, so all you would have to do is supervise the move. Once you make a decision about the type of services you'll need from the moving company, it's time to move on to the next steps.
First go through your closets or your attic and weed out the items you don't need or won't use any more and take them to a donation center where someone else can benefit from them. You also want to avoid moving things that can spill and damage other items such as paints, wood stains, etc. Also avoid bringing combustibles such as propane or compressed air. Avoid anything flammable too, such as gas tanks with gas in them or even motor oil.
Organizing the move
As you begin packing, start gathering lots of boxes. You can get these easily by going to nearby grocery stores and asking for their used boxes before they throw them away. It's a good idea to get more then you think you will need. It's a good idea to pack by room, and label the boxes appropriately. This kind of organization will help with unpacking, because it will keep you from sorting through boxes looking for certain items. If you have children, packing by room will help ensure there is no conflict between your children about whose room one toy belongs in, etc.
If you're loading or unloading the truck yourself, a good way to load the boxes is by room, such as all boxes from the kitchen are in the back and all boxes from the master bedroom are in the front etc. This will also help with unloading, because you will not have to tell your friends and family who are helping where to take each individual box.
Once you've got the truck unloaded, you can set up your furniture, unpack and settle in to enjoy your new home.
