But if the preseason coaches’ poll is any indication the Great Lakes Football Conference (GLFC) again figures to feature a very close race for the league title.
In the GLFC’s 2010 preseason coaches’ poll three of the league’s four teams -- Missouri S&T, Saint Joseph’s College and newcomer Urbana (Ohio) University -- tied for the No. 1 pick in the conference.
All three of the schools finished with 12 points in the poll, with Urbana and Missouri S&T splitting the four 1st-place votes. Finishing fourth in the poll was Kentucky Wesleyan.
Missouri S&T brings a large contingent of returning players to the linebacker position for the 2010 season, but given that only a handful have any significant game experience, the Miners will need that group to progress quickly to help the defense succeed as a whole.
The leader in the experience category as the season gets underway is Ashley Jordan, who recorded 42 tackles from that spot last year, while Nate Stodghill saw time there as well. The others who will compete for roles at flex linebacker include Jared Jenkins, Ewanu Meneh and Ian Kreher as well as redshirt freshman Ryan Morse.
