As the Missouri State Fair opens today, we are reminded throughout history, various cultures around the world have held an innate fascination with finding the World’s Strongest Man.
The strongman sport is the modern culmination of this fascination and serves as the ultimate test of human strength, speed and coordination. For the first time in Missouri, at the 2010 Missouri State Fair, Mark Kirsch of Seattle, one of the strongest men on earth, will demonstrate his unique ability of pulling large and heavy vehicles.
Fairgoers will be able to witness the force Kirsch’s mind and body must generate in order to break the inertia three times daily from today to Saturday as he overpowers a Caterpillar 725 Haul Truck provided by Dean Machinery which weighs more than 50,000 pounds.
Kirsch trained for about six years to condition his body in order to gain the muscular strength needed to pull an object weighing 1,000 times more than he does.
His training includes attempting to pull immovable objects such as buildings. Although this is an impossible task, it works the right muscles needed to pull heavy vehicles.
In addition to an intense training regimen, Kirsch follows a diet loaded with high quality proteins. Kirsch also stresses the importance of mental strength as well as physical when facing these challenges.
He uses this mental focus to gauge the internal strength needed to tackle these incredible feats. Kirsch has worked for years to master the internal focus, movements, power techniques and necessary skills to pull these massive vehicles and to blur the barrier for physiological capabilities of the human body.
Kirsch understands that these types of challenges pose a real danger. Mark’s body must overcome the strain of stress placed on tendons, ligaments, muscles and the skeletal structure as bones are expanding nearly to their breaking points.
Kirsch’s strongman career has been marked by record-breaking pulls. In 2008, he set the World Record for heaviest plane pull and is, to date, the only professional strongman to ever pull a jumbo jet aircraft.
The Fair will be “Growing Great Memories” today to Aug. 22 in Sedalia.
