A steady downpour made the Waynesville High School girls’ soccer team’s home opener miserable. Julia Burns made the night even worse.
The Washington senior scored four goals and added an assist in the Lady Blue Jays 6-0 win over the Lady Tigers on Friday night at Slaughter Field.
In spite of the lopsided score, WHS head coach Mike Gow wasn’t totally displeased with the results.
“In the second half, our defense played a lot better,” he said. “We changed formations back there and added a sweeper and they weren’t getting those through balls like they were in the first half.”
The Blue Jays (3-2) scored five goals in the first half, but the Tiger defense allowed only one in the second. Waynesville (1-2) played a flat three back defense in the first half, allowing Burns to easily slice through the defenders for her three goals.
But in the second half, senior Kara Heath went back as the lone sweeper. That stopped the Washington attackers from going in alone on through balls.
Burns got her fourth goal in the second half, but it didn’t come as easy as the first three.
Waynesville scoring chances were few and far between. After not managing a single shot on goal in the first half, the Tigers got three in the second.
Their best chance for a goal came at the 13:07 mark of the second half. Freshman Jordan Kilthau was fouled in the penalty area and got a penalty kick. Sophomore Jesslyn Clark got the rebound on the miss but her shot was a bit high and through the uprights of the football goal posts.
Washington dominated nearly all other aspects of the game. They outshot the Tigers 13-3 and although the Tigers had more corner kicks— six to Washington’s four— none of them amounted to any goals.
Aside from Burns, Washington’s two other goals came from junior Kayla Nurnberger and senior Melissa Beste, both in the first half.
The Lady Tigers return to the field next Tuesday for their Ozark Conference opener. They’ll host Springfield Kickapoo at 5 p.m. at Slaughter Field. The junior varsity will kick off first with the varsity to follow.
WHS JV 1, Washington 0: The Lady Tiger JV team won 1-0 to improve their record to 3-0.
Waynesville freshman Chantelle Dubois scored the lone Lady Tiger goal with 7:50 to go in the game on a penalty kick.
With the win, the JV squad matches the school record for best-ever start by a JV team.
