A pair of Frisco League athletes were leading their respective state tournament fields after the first day of competition Monday in the Missouri Class 1 and Class 2 State Golf Tournaments.
In the Missouri Class 2 State Tournament, being held at Deer Lake Golf Course in Springfield, defending state champion Jace Long of Dixon shared the first-round individual lead.
Long, an All-America junior golfer who has signed to play golf with Mizzou next school year, shares the first-round lead with Ash Grove senior Jordan Dickson, both having shot 1-under-par 71 on Monday.
Houston’s Dustin Blackburn is 20th in the individual standings with 80.
Two-time defending state champion Ash Grove has a comfortable lead in the team standings. Ash Grove shot 311 Monday while Bishop LeBlond is second with 326, Springfield Catholic third with 332 and Belle fourth with 334.
The final round in the Class 1-4 state golf tournaments are scheduled for Tuesday.
Class 1
In the Class 1 State Tournament at Silo Ridge Golf & Country Club in Bolivar, Newburg senior J.D. Nash has a one-stroke lead in the medalist race after the first round.
Nash shot 1-over-par 73 and leads Tipton senior Trey Allison, who shot 74. Windsor junior Josh Sadler is third with 75.
Also for Newburg, sophomore Cameron Smith is tied for 96th with 100, sophomore Shane Lewis is tied for 111th with 105 and freshman Drew DeLong is 119th with 112.
Laquey junior Brandon Hernandez shot 117 to stand 120th after the first round.
As a team Newburg is ninth with 390.
Tipton leads the Class 1 team standings with 327.
Class 4
In the Missouri Class 4 State Tournament, held at Island Green Golf Course in Republic, Springfield Kickapoo of the Ozark Conference leads the team standings with 314 while Ozark and Park Hill South are tied for second with 317 and Rockhurst was in fourth with 318.
Rolla, of the Ozark Conference, was in eighth place after the first round with 328.
Kickapoo junior Dillon Maloney and Jackson freshman Tanner Werner tied for first place with 1-under-par 71.
Rolla sophomore Will Baylor was tied for eighth place individually with 75. Also for Rolla junior Chris Martin and junior Brandon Weaver were tied for 45th with 81; senior Brock Jones was tied for 114th with 91, and senior Chris Dodge was tied for 121st with 94.
Class 3
In the Missouri Class 3 State Tournament, at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Kearney is the team leader after the first day with 311 while Priory was second with 317. West Plains, of the Ozark Conference, was eighth with 338.
Drew Decker of Excelsior Springs was the individual leader with even-par 72.
