West Plains, Mo. -

WEST PLAINS-- Over the past weekend the Waynesville High School girls soccer team competed in the West Plains Lady Zizzer Classic and finished with a record of 1-2.

On Friday the Lady Tigers (now 3-11 overall)  struggled against Moberly, the No. 8 team in Class 2. The Lady Spartans were on fire from the beginning, scoring their first goal six minutes into the game. They scored two more goals in the first half and four in the second half to finish with a 7-0 win over Waynesville.

On Saturday the Waynesville squad fared much better, playing a pair of 1-0 games and coming away with a split.

In the first game of the Lady Tigers played another set of Tigers from Cape Girardeau Central.

The only goal in that contest was scored by Cape Central’s Sarah Uptmor with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.

While Waynesville lost the first game that day, the second game had a much better result. The

Lady Tigers faced the Lady Raiders of Nettelton High from Jonesboro, Ark. and got on the right side of the other 1-0 contest.

Waynesville senior Lynette Newcomb scored the lone goal in that game eight minutes into the second half. Senior Orielle Thomas helped her for the assist.

Moberly won the tournament, which awarded points based on the following criteria: five points for a win, three for a tie, two for a shutout and one point per goal scored.

The Lady Spartans scored 30 points, shutting out their opponents all three of their games by a combined score of 18-0.

Waynessville finished with eight points by virtue of their win, goal and shutout.

Although the Lady Tigers’ match against Joplin today has been postponed, they’ll return to the field next Tuesday when they’ll once again travel to West Plains, this time to play the Lady Zizzers in an Ozark Conference matchup.

The Lady Tigers remain 1-5 in league play, while the Lady Zizzers are 1-3 in the conference and 5-10 overall.
