Waynesville’s 22-21 loss to Springfield-Kickapoo Friday night at Slaughter Field was a tale of two halves.

After both offenses came out firing with big plays and combined for 35 first half points, the game turned into a defensive struggle. Waynesville’s defense held strong for most of the second half but the Chiefs capitalized on a short field after senior quarterback Payton Finch fumbled. Kickapoo running back Patrick Kilgore took advantage and scored the half's only touchdown on a short run with just more than three minutes remaining.

The game appeared to be headed for overtime but the Chiefs ran a fake-extra point to perfection when quarterback Brett Briers found junior Hunter Peck wide open in the corner of the endzone for the final
score.
