LAQUEY— One streak was broken, another extended. For the Richland Lady Bears, it was nice to kill two birds with one stone.
Richland defeated Laquey 55-49 in a Frisco League contest Thursday night at Laquey High School, running their current win streak to nine games and breaking their three-game losing streak against the Lady Hornets, which dates back to the 2007/ 08 season.
“It was mental, not physical for us to beat them,” RHS head coach Rich Mueller said. “Because we knew we had the physical ability to beat them, we just had that mental roadblock.”
On Thursday, the Lady Bears (now 15-5, 6-0 Frisco League) capitalized on hot shooting and Laquey foul trouble to pull ahead in the game and take control atop the Frisco League standings.
Junior Mallory Warren scored 19 points and was 11 of 13 (84 percent) from the foul line. Sophomore Emily Case scored 12 points— six of which came courtesy of two LONG three pointers. Sophomore Jessica Hutton added 12.
Laquey junior forward Brock ended up leading the Lady Hornets (16-4, 4-1 Frisco League) in scoring, netting 14 despite sitting out the entire second quarter with foul trouble. Senior guard Emily Murray added 12.
Richland was 15 for 22 (68 percent) at the free throw line. Laquey shot three free throws all game, only hitting one.
“That’s what wins games,” Mueller said. “Foul shots and layups. And we did that tonight.”
Laquey hosts Crocker in another Frisco League game Monday, while Richland travels to Crocker on Thursday.
The Lady Lions are also undefeated in Frisco League play, currently 4-0.
NOTES: Laquey won the junior varsity contest, 37-29. Tanaii Hunter led the Hornets with 16 points while Jessica Birdsong scored 11 for Richland.
