Waynesville head coach Rick Vernon understands how crucial the first game of the season is.

“The first game is always important, not just for conference, but for momentum builders,” Vernon said. “Everyone’s starting off at the same time and everyone wants to get that first win.”

The Tigers get their long awaited opportunity to put last year’s 3-7 mark behind them tonight when they open the season against Springfield- Kickapoo. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Slaughter Field.

Things didn’t go as planned in last year’s season opener for the Tigers. Waynesville lost 38-7 at Helias. They went on to lose their first four games by an average of more than 18 points per game.
