On a chilly, windy afternoon St. James held on to clip Laquey 2-1 Tuesday at the St. James Middle School Field.
In the district tournament championship game last season the St. James and Laquey squads battled to a near-standoff. The game was tied after regulation and, after two overtimes, the contest was still tied and went into shootouts.
Finally, St. James edged Laquey in the shootout to capture its second consecutive district title.
The Laquey Lady Hornets return the major portion of that ‘08 squad this spring and they came to the St. James Tuesday for a rematch.
As expected the two teams again locked up in a tight one. As it turned out all the scoring came in the first half, and sophomore forward Amanda White ended up scoring the game-winner on a direct kick with just seconds left in the first half.
Midway through the first half junior midfielder Kyleigh McDowell gave St. James a 1-0 advantage on an unassisted goal.
That lead didn’t last long, as Laquey’s Emily Murray scored the tying goal.
Sophomore Rachel Fetters got the win in goal for the Lady Tigers while Cayla Mayle was the losing goalie.
St. James had 28 shots-on-goal.
St. James improves to 2-0 while Laquey falls to 1-2.
“The conditions were extremely difficult,” said St. James head coach Casey Smith. “We possessed the ball most of the game. We didn’t finish in the second half, but we finished in the first half.”
Laquey won the junior varsity game 2-0. It was a scoreless tie at halftime. Freshman Lena Smith was in goal in the first half while sophomore Kayla Walters was in goal in the second half for the jayvee Lady Tigers.
The Lady Hornets’ next scheduled matches will be at Saturday’s Stover Tournament.
