PLEASANT HOPE—Both Laquey and Richland were eliminated from the district soccer tournament this week, meaning that there are no area girls teams still alive.

Laquey lost to Springfield Catholic 10-0 on Tuesday in the Class 1 District 6 tournament. Catholic, the top seed, is also the top team in Class 1.

“We got crushed,” said Laquey head coach Will Coyne. “We didn’t generate enough offense. Maybe we were worn out from [Monday] night.”

On Monday, the Lady Hornets blasted Mountain View Liberty 7-4. Senior Shelbee Cowart scored a hat trick for the 24th goal of her girls’ career (she played on the boys team her freshman and sophomore years).

Junior Emily Murray added two goals, for her 15th and 16th of the year. Coyne says she now has 34 career goals.

Tanaii Hunter and Jennifer Hernandez also scored for the Hornets on Monday.

Laquey ends the season at 6-12, but Coyne thinks they’ll be back with a vengeance next year.

“Some of these teams better wake up,” he said. “We were young this year, but next year we’ll be a force.”

Richland lost its first round game on Monday, dropping a 6-0 contest to Joplin McAuley Catholic.
