The Waynesville High School girls’ basketball team couldn’t overcome the 24 turnovers it surrendered to Springfield Central, falling by a score of 62-40.
“When you commit 24 turnovers, you aren’t going to win too many games,” WHS head coach Brittany Matlock said.
The Lady Tigers (0-1) were only down by ten at the end of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs (1-0) outscored them 19-8 in the fourth to pull away for good. Waynesville’s young team showed its inexperience against Central’s senior-laden squad.
“We played hard on defense, but we couldn’t score,” Matlock said. “[Central] showed us what we need to work on.”
April Dowell led the way for the Lady Tigers with ten points, while Orielle Thomas scored nine and grabbed ten boards.
The Lady Tigers will have a five-day layoff before their next game, when they travel to Sullivan on Monday, Dec. 8. The junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.
Junior varsity score:
Waynesville 54, Central 32: Ekate Lymon scored ten, grabbing ten rebounds for the JV Lady Tigers (1-0).
