What has been a very special school year athletically at Waynesville High School could get much more special over the next couple of weeks.
The WHS Athletic Department could shut down right now and boast perhaps the most success of any school year in the history of Tiger sports, highlighted, of course, by the WHS Class 5 state football championship and the boys’ and girls’ double-header Class 5 state quarterfinal berths. Throw in a couple of individual state wrestling championships by Aaron Morgan and Chase Chavers.
However, the Tiger track and field teams as well as the WHS girls’ soccer teams, in particular, has great chances on adding to the great team accomplishments of 07-08.
The Tiger boys’ and girls’ track teams are scheduled to compete in the Missouri Class 4 District 2 Meet today at Kirkwood High School.
The top four finishers in each event will advance from the district meet to sectional action. The top four sectional finishers then go on to the Class 4 State Meet in Jefferson City.
And Waynesville has a chance to send a slew of trackers on. The WHS times and distances are sitting pretty compared to other district schools.
For the WHS boys, senior Sam Scott in the 400-meter dash and senior Lucas Bateman in the 300-meter hurdles are still unbeaten on the season, as is the boys’ 4x200-meter relay squad.
For the girls freshman sprinter Ekate Lymon has been the winner in most of the 100- and 200-meter dash events she has competed in this year.
In particular, the Tiger boys’ track squad may be vying for a state track championship if everything falls into place.
And the Lady Tiger girls’ soccer team is searching for the first-ever soccer district title in school history. And they are the No. 1 seed for next week’s Class 2 District 11 Tournament to do just that.
The WHS girls’ soccer has 17 wins. Senior forward Katie Pritchard became the No. 1 large-school goal-scorer in Missouri girls’ soccer history, and senior midfielder Tash Lord has cracked Missouri’s top-10 in career assists.
It’s been a banner year. It could get even better soon.
