On Monday night, the Waynesville girls’ soccer team’s game with Branson ended a little early.
Thanks in part to an eight-goal first half, the Tigers scored enough goals to require the 10-goal mercy rule, and subsequently beat Branson 10-0 at Slaughter Field.
A pair of freshman–Sarah Dowling and Jesslyn Clark–combined for half of the goals in the contest.
“That was huge,” said head coach Mike Gow.
Dowling had a hat trick with three goals and Clark scored two. Senior Erica Combs also scored three goals, also recording five assists.
Senior Orielle Thomas and junior Leslie Holslather also added one goal each for the Lady Tigers (1-1).
The Lady Tigers controlled the entire game from the outset, beginning with Combs’ first goal at 30:15 off a free kick.
After that first goal, they came in bunches for the Lady Tigers.
Clark scored her first goal about two minutes later, on an assist from Combs.
Then, at 25:42, Thomas scored her goal (also with help from Combs), followed by Dowling a minute later (from junior Ann Robbins) and Holslather a minute after that (from senior Abby Clabaugh).
The Lady Tigers wouldn’t need any more after that, but they wouldn’t quit-it was only the first half.
Combs scored her second goal at 9:47 on another beautiful free kick to make it 6-0.
Then Dowling scored on a strange play with 7:20 remaining. Branson goalkeeper Brianna Reyes leaped in front of one Waynesville shot, making a nice save, but the ball bounced hard off her face and she hit the turf as Dowling knocked the ball in on the other side. The Branson defender tried to save it with her foot but she couldn’t make it over in time.
Reyes left the game to applause for making that save and Brianna Ford came in to relieve her for the rest of the match.
She fared a little better, but the Waynesville attack was just too strong for the overmatched and seemingly undersized Pirates.
Trips to the Lady Tiger end were few and far between for the Pirates, and when they were finally able to attack the Waynesville defenders cleared the ball quickly.
Combs scored another goal at 2:09, a nice header over Ford on an assist from Dowling, to make the score 8-0 going into halftime.
The Lady Tigers were so efficient at attacking and clearing in the first half that goalkeeper Alicia Cook faced a whopping total of one shot in the first half, making the save. Annalisa Davis relieved her in the second half.
There were only two goals in the second half: Cook at 36:00, on a Combs assist, and Dowling at 17:10 for the game-winner.
The Lady Tigers travel to Ozark today to take on their Tigers; the JV game will begin at 5 p.m. at Ozark.
Tiger Notes: The 10 goals Monday ties a school record for goals in a game. It’s been done nine times previously, most recently on May 15, 2005 against Hillcrest in the district tournament...Combs’ five assists also ties the school record for assists in a game; that record was set by Natasha Lord on April 5, 2005, also against Hillcrest...
